Knowing the shape of the day removes most of the nerves. The CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test is a touch-screen exam taken at one of 150+ UK test centres. You will be in and out within the hour, and you will know your result before you leave the building. Here is exactly how it runs.
Your test day in 3 steps
Arrive 15 minutes early
Bring valid photo ID - passport or driving licence - and your booking confirmation. Without ID you will be turned away and lose the fee.
Sit the 45-minute test
50 multiple-choice questions on a touch screen, including behavioural case studies. The pass mark is 45 out of 50.
Collect your result
You get your result the same day along with your test ID, which you then enter on your CSCS Card application.
What the questions cover
The syllabus spans general responsibilities, accident reporting, health and welfare, working at height, manual handling, hazardous substances, fire, plant and vehicles, and environmental awareness. Managers and professionals sit the MAP version, which adds supervisory duties.
How to prepare
Do not walk in cold. The online CITB Test Revision material covers all 16 modules and includes several timed practice exams, which is the closest thing to sitting the real test twice before you sit it once.
