Which CSCS Card Do I Need?

A quick guide to picking the right CSCS Card colour for your role.

The colour of your CSCS Card tells a site manager two things at a glance: what you are qualified to do and how much responsibility you can carry. Pick the wrong one and your application is refused, so it is worth two minutes of reading. Every colour requires the correct CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test, and the higher-level cards require the Managers and Professionals (MAP) version of that test rather than the Operatives version.

How to choose in 3 questions

1

What is your job title?

Labourer, trade, supervisor, manager or professional - this narrows you to one or two colours immediately.

2

What qualification do you hold?

No qualification at all? Start with the Green Card Online Course. An NVQ Level 2 puts you on Blue, Level 3 on Gold.

3

Which CITB Test matches?

Operatives for Green, Blue and Red; MAP for Gold, Black and White. Book the right CITB Test before applying.

Still not sure?

If you sit between two categories, apply for the card that matches the qualification you can actually evidence today. You can upgrade later once your NVQ is complete, and a Red Trainee Card keeps you working on site in the meantime.

Prepare before you book

Whichever colour you need, the test is the same 50 questions in 45 minutes with a 45/50 pass mark. The online CITB Test Revision material covers 16 modules and several full practice exams so the format holds no surprises.

Key takeaways

  • The card colour follows your qualification, not your ambition.
  • Gold, Black and White need the MAP test, not the Operatives test.
  • Red Trainee Cards bridge the gap while you finish an NVQ.
