About the Managers & Professionals (MAP) Test
The CITB Managers and Professionals (MAP) Test is the HS&E Test taken by anyone in a supervisory, management or professional role in construction. It reflects the broader legal duties, planning responsibilities and decision-making that come with running teams and projects. It is the required HS&E assessment for the CSCS Gold Supervisor Card, CSCS Black Manager Card and CSCS White Professional Card.
What it actually tests
The MAP Test covers all the core HS&E topics plus additional questions on leadership responsibilities, the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations, risk assessments, method statements, supervising safe systems of work, incident investigation, and communicating safety expectations to teams. It expects you to think about safety from a supervisor's or manager's point of view, not just the worker's.
Why it exists
Supervisors and managers set the safety culture on site. If they don't understand their legal duties, workers are put at risk. The MAP Test exists to make sure everyone taking responsibility for other people has been assessed against the same clear standard, so that clients, contractors and workers can trust the people leading each project.
Who needs it
You must sit the MAP Test if you are applying for a CSCS Gold Supervisory Card, a CSCS Black Manager Card, or a CSCS White Professionally Qualified Person (PQP) Card. It applies to site supervisors, foremen, site managers, project managers, contracts managers, construction directors, and professionals such as surveyors, engineers and designers working on live sites.
The test itself
The MAP Test is 45 minutes long, contains 50 multiple-choice questions and is delivered on-screen at a CITB approved test centre. You must score 45 out of 50 to pass. The format is the same as the Operatives Test but the content is aimed at people who plan, supervise and manage rather than carry out the physical work.
How it links to CSCS Cards
A valid MAP Test pass is mandatory before you can apply for the CSCS Gold Supervisor, Black Manager or White Professional Card. Once passed, you must apply for your card within 2 years. Most managers book the MAP Test first, revise with our CITB revision materials, then submit their CSCS Card application as soon as they receive their pass certificate.
